Winged phalluses in Pompeii, often referred to as "flying dicks," were common Roman symbols of protection, fertility, and prosperity. These images, known as fascinus, acted as apotropaic charms to ward off the evil eye, envy, and bad luck, appearing frequently on amulets, oil lamps, hung above doorways, dangling on windchimes and in street carvings.
Carved penises on streets weren’t jokes, they acted as wayfinding symbols, often pointing toward brothels, taverns, or places of pleasure, readable across languages and cultures. Long before a GPS could guide you to a strip club or Brothel, this is how the people of pompei would guide travellers to their pleasure centers.
I added some photos i took during my travels there, it was a huge inspiration for some pieces of my newest collection.
I also added photos of the paintings in the brothel. In those days and ages, there were travellers of all languages, so, to be able to communicate the pleasures they wanted to share with the courtesans, there were paintings on the wall with prices under them. The walls of the rooms were also covered in love letters and "reviews" of the courtesans for others to read.
